Baa Atoll administratively South Maalhosmadulu was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011, the first in the Maldives. The designation protects the extraordinary marine ecosystem centred on Hanifaru Bay, a small protected lagoon on the eastern rim of the atoll where manta rays and whale sharks congregate in numbers found nowhere else on earth.
