When to Visit the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the few destinations on earth where the question of timing genuinely changes the experience. The archipelago sits just above the equator with ocean temperatures steady at around 28°C year round and no tropical cyclones.

The archipelago stretches over 800 kilometres from north to south, meaning when conditions deteriorate around Male, the northern atolls often remain dry. At The Signature Collection, we operate from Sri Lanka, under four hours from Male, giving our clients flexibility that European travellers do not have.

When to Visit the Maldives

The Two Seasons

Understanding the northeast and southwest monsoons is the single most important factor in choosing when to go and where to stay.

November to April

Iruvai, Dry Season

The northeast monsoon brings the driest and calmest conditions. Skies are clearer, seas are flatter, and underwater visibility peaks at 20 to 30 metres in most atolls. This is high season. December to February is the premium period, with January and February delivering the most consistent conditions across the entire archipelago.

May to October

Hulhangu, Wet Season

The southwest monsoon brings more cloud cover, occasional swells, and short afternoon rain squalls. Rain falls in intense bursts and clears quickly. This is when the Maldives delivers its most dramatic marine spectacle: the manta ray aggregations at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll. For wildlife focused travellers, May to November is the season to target, not avoid.

Geography

North vs South

The Maldives spans 800 kilometres from north to south. This is the single most practical piece of information for travellers choosing an atoll during the shoulder season or wet season.

When the southwest monsoon is active between Male and Ari Atoll, conditions in the northern atolls like Noonu and Raa can remain clear and calm. The central atolls carry the highest marine life density year round. The southern atolls deliver the most powerful surf and most spectacular pelagic diving.

Northern Atolls

Haa Alifu · Noonu · Raa · Lhaviyani · Baa

The northern atolls receive less rainfall during the wet season. This makes them the preferred choice for clients travelling from May to October who want to minimise weather risk. Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll markets itself as a year round destination precisely because of its relative weather stability.

Central & Southern Atolls

Ari · Dhaalu · Laamu · Huvadhoo

The central atolls carry the highest marine life density, particularly for whale sharks in South Ari. The southern atolls are among the most remote and deliver the most powerful surf and most spectacular pelagic diving. Most reliable from November to April.

Atoll Guide

When to Visit Each Atoll

Baa Atoll

Peak: May to November

The standout season for Baa is May to November, when manta ray aggregations at Hanifaru Bay reach their peak. June to September is the absolute prime window, with hundreds of mantas feeding simultaneously in the UNESCO protected bay.

The Overwater Villa

The Overwater Villa

The overwater villa is the defining image of the Maldives. A structure on stilts, extending over a turquoise lagoon, with a private deck and a ladder descending directly into the ocean. The concept originated in French Polynesia in the 1960s and was adopted by the Maldives in the 1980s.

At entry level, an overwater villa offers the experience of sleeping above the ocean. At the ultra luxury level, it offers a glass floored living space looking into the reef below, a private infinity pool merging with the horizon, a retractable roof for stargazing, and a butler who delivers breakfast over the water before the resort wakes.

Inside the Overwater Villa

What you actually get, from private decks to glass floors and butler service.

Private Deck

Standard in all overwater villas. A deck extending over the lagoon with sun loungers, typically with a staircase or ladder descending into the water.

Glass Floor

A glass panel in the bedroom or living area allows views into the reef or lagoon below. Best glass floors are positioned over living reef at 2 to 5 metres depth.

Private Pool

An infinity pool on the deck, typically merging with the lagoon visually. The single most requested villa feature among TSC clients.

Lagoon Access

A staircase or ladder from the deck into the lagoon. Some resorts have shallow, sandy lagoon access ideal for snorkeling; others have deeper water access.

Sunrise vs Sunset

East facing villas receive direct sunrise from 06:00. West facing villas face the sunset with golden light from late afternoon. This distinction should be specified at booking.

Butler Service

Included at ultra luxury properties. At Naladhu and Soneva Jani, the butler to villa ratio means near constant personal service level.

Size Range

Overwater villas range from 55 sq m to over 3,000 sq m. For two people, 80 to 150 sq m is comfortable. Above 200 sq m, designed for extended stays.

What to Specify When Booking

An overwater villa booking without specifications is an incomplete booking. Confirm these details with TSC at reservation.

Sunrise or Sunset

Specify which orientation you want. East facing for sunrise. West facing for sunset. TSC confirms availability at booking.

Lagoon Position

End of jetty villas offer more privacy. Closer to shore villas are more convenient. For honeymooners, end of jetty is strongly recommended.

Lagoon Depth

Shallow (1 to 3m): ideal for snorkeling from the deck. Deeper: better for swimming. Specify based on your priority.

Glass Floor

Confirm the specific villa category has this feature. Some resorts offer glass floors in premium categories only.

Private Pool

If a private pool is non negotiable, specify at booking and confirm it is included in the assigned villa category.

Villa Positioning

Individual villas vary in position, view, and proximity to neighbours. TSC requests specific villa numbers from the resort at booking.

TSC Room Assignment Protocol

TSC requests preferred villa orientation, position, and features from the resort at the time of booking confirmation. For honeymoon and special occasion bookings, TSC specifies end of jetty or the most secluded available villa. We follow up 7 days before arrival to reconfirm the villa assignment and any special arrangements. A TSC booking is not confirmed until the villa category and position preferences are communicated to the resort.
